Background
Established in 1982 E.C., Kebele 20 Shinta Primary School serves approximately 600 students, from kindergarten through sixth grade, with a dedicated staff of just 15 teachers.
Before TCOH’s involvement, the school’s learning environment presented serious safety and structural concerns. Aging classrooms had deteriorated significantly, and students and teachers regularly encountered rodents and lizards inside the facilities, particularly when returning to school after the weekend.
For more than three decades, the school had never benefited from a comprehensive construction or rebuilding plan. Necessary repairs were often temporary patching holes, with teachers themselves contributing resources to keep classrooms functional.
After assessing the school, TCOH determined that Kebele 20 Shinta Primary School met our key criteria for support: demonstrated need, worker safety, and strong community commitment to the project.
Our Method
Over the course of eight months, TCOH demolished two deteriorated classroom blocks and replaced them with two newly constructed blocks containing four classrooms each, for a total of eight brand new classrooms.
At the same time, another local nonprofit organization constructed an additional block of four classrooms. Together, these efforts provided the school with 12 new classrooms, significantly expanding its capacity and creating a safer, more welcoming learning environment.
The school’s two remaining older blocks are currently being used as administrative offices and library space. These structures will also require demolition and reconstruction in the future to bring them up to current standards.
Outcome
The impact of this project extends well beyond the new buildings.
With the additional classroom capacity, Kebele 20 Shinta Primary School is now able to serve approximately 200 additional students. The school has also expanded from sixth grade through eighth grade, allowing students to continue their education within their own school and community.
For future seventh and eighth grade students, this means they will no longer have to leave Kebele 20 Shinta Primary School and travel elsewhere simply to continue their education.
What began as a classroom construction project has helped create greater access, improved safety, and new educational opportunities for hundreds of students and for many more in the years ahead.
